Osteoporosis is often viewed as a condition that only affects post-menopausal women, but this is a dangerous misconception. In men, bone loss starts later and progresses more slowly, but by age 65-70, men and women lose bone mass at the same rate.
Common Symptoms
Osteoporosis is known as a 'silent disease' because you often cannot feel your bones getting weaker. Symptoms often do not appear until a fracture occurs.
- Back pain caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra.
- Loss of height over time.
Causes and Risk Factors
For men, the leading cause of secondary osteoporosis is low testosterone levels (hypogonadism). Testosterone helps protect bone density.
